Where Old Meets New

Bringing Japanese tradition into everyday life
through textiles, craftsmanship, and hands-on experiences.

Rooted in Tradition. Inspired by New York.

OUR STORY

wuhao newyork Inc., based in New York City, specializes in Japanese traditional textiles, including tenugui, noren, maekake, uniforms, furoshiki, and a wide range of hand-dyed and printed products. We offer custom-made creations as well as carefully selected items for both businesses and individual customers.

  • Since 2007, we have worked closely with partner factories in Japan, managing every step from design to production. This collaboration allows us to create distinctive, one-of-a-kind products tailored to each client’s needs.

Beyond our products, we offer hands-on workshops featuring tenugui and other hand-dyed items, sharing the richness of Japanese culture through direct experience. Participants can explore traditional techniques and discover the stories behind each piece.

Our philosophy, Where Old Meets New, reflects our commitment to honoring tradition while embracing innovation. Through our products and workshops, we hope to bring everyday moments enriched by Japanese history, culture, and craftsmanship.

THE FOUNDER

Meet Ruri

Ruri is the founder of wuhao newyork Inc., a New York–based brand dedicated to sharing the beauty of traditional Japanese textiles through custom creations, curated collections, and cultural workshops.

Born and raised in Japan and later moved to China, she graduated from university in Beijing before building a career in trading and fashion across Asia and New York. Her experience in production, distribution, and brand partnerships gave her a deep understanding of how thoughtful products are created and brought to life.

  • In 2002, Ruri discovered the comfort and beauty of Tenugui during her husband’s cancer treatment, when it was used as a gentle head covering. Its soft texture, practical size, and uplifting colors brought comfort to everyday life and revealed the quiet joy found in simple, meaningful objects.

Inspired by that experience, Ruri moved to New York City in 2007 and founded wuhao newyork Inc.. Since then, she has introduced tenugui, Noren, and other hand-dyed Japanese textiles through products, events, and hands-on workshops. Working closely with skilled artisans and partner dye houses in Japan, Ruri remains involved in every step—from design to production. She loves meeting people, sharing the stories behind each piece, and creating connections through the warmth, craftsmanship, and everyday beauty of Japanese culture.

Her hope is simple: that each piece brings joy, inspiration, and a smile to daily life.
