Kiyoshi Yamashita (1922-1971) is a famous 20th-century artist in Japan. He is well-known not only for his detailed hari-e painting (pasted paper pictures), but for his unusual life. Born with a mental handicap, Yamashita won early praise for his genius in creating hari-e works using a technique that involves sticking tiny pieces of paper to a canvas. He soon featured in many exhibitions across Japan. Yamashita roamed the country wearing only an undershirt from 1940 to 1954, earning himself the nickname "the naked artist wanderer". His composition and life have inspired many people all over the world. Our Yamashita series of tenugui are custom made and designed by wuhao newyork as a tribute to his compositions and are under licensed permission from his family members.
