Tenugui mumbling vol.30 – Sakura Matsuri in Washington DC

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

March 20 is Shun-bun (春分) in Japan. In the day of Shunbun, day and night are exactly the same length because of where the sun is located.?People celebrate the new?spring… animals wake up?from a long hibernation… greens start to grow and flowers bloom everywhere.
Sakura?is cherry blossoms in Japanese. The cherry blossoms have started blooming last week in Japan, and it’s almost time to bloom here in US.?
The Sakura Matsuri in Washington DC – Japanese Street Festival is now the largest one-day exhibition of Japanese culture in the United States. And it will be held on April 04 (Sat) this year.
We are very pleased to inform you that we will attend to Sakura Matsuri in DC as a Tenugui vendor this year. The short movie by Mindsfireproduction?above, is the Sakura Matsuri 2008. And you can see?our Tenugui booth there, our first year attending! ?
Stretching for nearly one mile through the streets of downtown Washington DC, from near the White House to FBI headquarters, the Sakura Matsuri is held each spring. On good weather days, it has drawn over 140,000 visitors in 7 hours. Please find more detail about the Sakura matsuri from the link below.

put sweet memories into your treasure box

Let's put sweet memories into your treasure box

I always enjoy hearing from our wuhao friend. I met Masayo-san last month at the Kimono event. We had a chance to share a cab after the event. We simply introduced each other and enjoyed the night ride in Manhattan. We talked about many things… the performance we saw, living in NY, girl’s things… and also about tenugui.
Tenugui is very popular in Japan, so most families always have tenugui around them… in the bathroom, in the kitchen, or even in their handbags. Tenugui are always around… just like the love of a famiy.
Masayo-san told me that she made a treasure box with her old tenugui. These photos are of her treasure box. She put new life and style into her old tenugui… just so amazing how she made it!
Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful tenugui box with us. Masayo-san is a graphic designer in NY and you can see her works at the site www.abombinabull.com .

I have a treasure box in my home. Much love and memories are in my box. Photos, birthday candles and cards, new year’s tiara, rose petals, easter bunny, notes from my love, and my favorite tenugui … and many more treasures will come to my box!!!

Do you have a treasure box?
I think you do… special treasures that warm your heart…

Hina-matsuri is the girl’s festival on March 3rd in Japan, when the birth of girls is celebrated and wishes are expressed for their future happiness. These hina-ningyo (dolls) are mine and came all the way to New York. My aunt Yachiyo made them when I was born in Osaka, Japan. A couple of dolls have been traveling with me all over the world… wow,?they have?been away from Japan 25-years this year! I know that they have seen many chapters of my life… Please see more about Hina-matsuri on our page from here
