money_wrap_sakura_up1

Japanese traditional style money envelop made with Sakura Tenugui! A Musubi-kiri bow is suitable to use for a wedding or any other celebrations, except a baby shower.

It’s Spring time, season of Graduation and Wedding, and many celebrations are on the way. We have a great gift idea for your family and friends, TENUGUI MONEY WRAP!

In Japan, we also customarily send some money as a gift for celebration, so their family and friends can use it for their future needs. We have a special money envelop, called O-SHU-GI BUKURO (お祝儀袋), means Celebration Envelop. Usually, comes with two parts, a white paper envelop for putting money, and outer wrapping with Japanese washi paper, and then, ties a bow with Japanese traditional strings called Mizuhiki.

Mizuhiki has some traditonal rules; let me explain about Mizuhiki. See the photo below;
mizuhiki_knots

The top one called HANA-MUSUBU, just like a standard bow knot. HANA-MUSUBU can unwind and make a knots in many times, so it uses for the event desired to occur repeatedly, like a new born baby and anniversary.

The middle one called MUSUBI-KIRI. MUSUBI-KIRI was knotted very tightly, and can’t unwind after made a knot, so it uses for the event not desired to occur again, such as wedding, celebration for the recovery. MUSUBI-KIRI is also used for funeral and memorial ceremony, but only uses black and white strings, instead red and white (or other colorful colors).

The last one called AWAJI-MUSUBI, AWAJI-MUSUBI was knotted tightly and many circle layers, wishing a long relationship, so it uses for the event like a wedding or anniversaries as well.

Tenugui Fan Yolin's Tenugui Noren

Tenugui Fan Yolin made Tenugui noren with two First Sunrise Tenugui

Tenugui Fan Yolin sent us a photo to sharing his Tenugui Noren with us! He used two First Sunrise Tenugui, and made a hem on the top of Tenugui for a rod. Can you see details on his Noren?? The cloud lined up together, cranes are flying toward each other… you know why? Because he used one tenugui face up, and the other uses reverse side, that is why he can made this detailed design. Only Japanese chusen tenugui can make this amazing trick!

Two cherry blossom tenugui can make a big one tree!

Two cherry blossom tenugui can make a big one tree!

Check this photo! I framed two Cherry Blossom tenugui, one is face up, and the other uses reverse side, and hang them on the wall next together. What you see on the wall?? Yes, one big Cherry Tree!

Japanese Chusen method came up over 100 years ago. Using this special dye method, and we can be able to dye both face and reverse side, dye through colors both side. That is why, chusen tenugui can make this special trick!

odds and ends tenugui cloth, buttons, and Masaki yarn... my TENUGUI MAGIC WORLD

odds and ends tenugui cloth, buttons, and Masaki yarn... my TENUGUI MAGIC WORLD

?
It has been in my thoughts since I had started my own Tenugui business in 2007, and finally It has arrived…? YES, it’s TENUGUI MAGIC!

I made a few movies showing you how to use Tenugui, and I called?them TENUGUI MAGIC. This 100% cotton rectangular cloth has many more possibilities than imaginable. It’s one of my dreams to create my own tenugui styles, and bring simple pleasures to you through this simple cotton cloth.

I always think about tenugui craftsman?in Japan when I hold tenugui?in my hand. Tenugui is created using the same method since the mid 1800′s, and is still made mostly by hand.? Washi paper stencil, molding, dyeing, washing and drying, and cutting each piece of Tenugui. I feel the tenugui spirit that has been carried along many decades of Japanese history.

TENUGUI MAGIC?is my own brand to provide new tenugui goods, and also, to?introduce you to the usability of Tenugui.? “Mottainai”?means don’t waste, and TENUGUI MAGIC was created along with Japanese economic philosophy, using odds and ends of Tenugui cloth or used tenugui (along with all the memories) reconstructed in various styles, and giving new life to a piece of cloth.
We will remake your favorite old tenugui?into a one of a kind accessory, bag, cover, box, or any other item.

“Reconstruct”, “Remake” and “Respect”….
I would like to express my appreciation to Japanese tradition and artisans.

My plan is to create a new sytle each month. Many more new styles are on the way, so please stay tuned?to TENUGUI MAGIC!

Heat Wave arrive in New York City…. hope you are doing well.

Finally, after a long time, of thinking and planning, I am introducing TENUGUI MAGIC!
Tenugui is multi functional, with so many possibilities to use, and change style. I have had so many ideas and projects in mind?for a long time, and finally one idea came true….. TENUGUI MISANGA DEBUT!

Tenugui?is still made mostly by hand. My favorite Chusen Dye has used the same method for hundreds of years. Washi paper stencil, molding, pasting, dyeing… all process is made by hand, and also cutting tenugui to each piece (photo above).
When we cut tenugui, there is always some excess of cloth. I was wondering what I could make? from these odds and ends of cloth? I just wanted to give new life to these little pieces of Tenugui….

TENUGUI MISANGA debut!

Tenugui mumbling Vol.96 – Make a wish – Tenugui Tanzaku

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Tanzaku is a Wish Tag for Tanabata Festival

Tanzaku is a Wish Tag for Tanabata Festival

July 7th is a Tanabata Festival in Japan, also called Star Festival. The story of Tanabata came from an ancient Asian folk legend about the Cow Herder Star (Altair) and his lover the Princess Weaver Star (Vega), who had been banished by her father to opposite ends of the Milky Way, doomed to meet each other but once a year at this time. If it rains that night and the stars cannot be seen, the lovers must wait another year to be re-united.

Each summer in Japan, children and their parents prepare for the festival by writing their wishes on Tanzaku, narrow strips of colored paper and hanging them with other paper ornaments on bamboo branches displayed at the entrance to the their homes. Everyone prays that the sky will be fair, the lovers will meet, and their wishes will be granted.

I made Tanzaku with Japanese 5-Yen coins last Tanabata. 5-yen coin has many good meanings. We call it Goen, which means good relationship. The first 5-yen was printed in 1949, it has three symbols on the face of coin, and one on the other side. Rice as Agricultures, Gear as Industry, Stripes (wave) as Fishery Industry, and new leaves as Forestry. It was designed with Wishes of reconstruction and development of Japan.

I made 5-yen Tanzaku for you all this year also. Any tenugui order until July 7th (Thursday), you’ll receive a 5-yen Tanzaku with your Tenugui.
Or any tenugui fans who want to have 5-yen Tanzaku, please send email to mail@wuhaonyc.com , I’ll send you one for your wish come true.

What is your wish year 2011?

 Love You

Tenugui mumbling Vol. 95 – Tenugui Magic Vol.05 How to use Tenugui by Sommelier Style

Tenugui Magic Vol.05 – How to use TENUGUI by Sommelier Style from Ruri Kippenbrock (wuhaonyc) on Vimeo.

I visited Yasu-san at 15 EAST (15 E. 15th street, NYC) Japanese Restaurant the other day. Yasu-san always supports me and Tenugui since I started my own company in 2007.

After his long career in his food service business in New York, he went to Los Angeles and expolered new location?a few years. And now he came back to New York, and challenging his new carrea in 15 EAST. His excellent service is always touched my heart very deeply. I’ll definately go anyplace he’ll be for my very special day!

He shows me “How to use Tenugui by Sommelier Style” on this movie. Tenugui is a perfect cloth to dry and shine luxury glassware. Yasu-san said; Tenugui is a very simple and great cloth to wipe a glass, because you don’t need to wipe it twice. Tenugui absorbs all moisture, and fine fibers don’t stick on the glass. Usually, he have to use two different kitchen cloths to wipe a glass, one for dry and one for shine, but not with Tenugui!

Thank you Yasu-san for sharing this great technique with us, and thank you very much for your support of Tenugui and me always!!!!
